The Southerly 49 boasts a robust variable draft swing keel system, a hallmark of Southerly Yachts, designed to offer a unique blend of exceptional sailing performance and the freedom to explore shallow waters.
The primary purpose of the variable draft swing keel is to allow the Southerly 49 to alter its draft significantly. At the touch of a button, the keel can be lowered for deep draft performance (10' 3") or raised (2' 10") for navigating shallow areas inaccessible to most yachts of this size. This dual capability dramatically expands the cruising potential of the Southerly 49.
The swing keel is a substantial, cast-iron hydrofoil, carefully shaped to provide excellent lift and minimize drag when lowered. It pivots on a robust stainless steel pin located at its leading edge.
The swing keel retracts into a reinforced recess or trunk built into the hull. This trunk is an integral part of the hull structure, ensuring both strength and watertight integrity, regardless of whether the keel is up or down.
A significant portion of the ballast (11,530 lbs) is incorporated into a fixed iron casting that forms a grounding plate at the bottom of the hull.
The keel is raised and lowered using a hydraulic ram powered by an electric pump. This system offers smooth and controlled movement of the heavy keel. There is a manual pump for redundancy, should it be needed.
